What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple mathematical formula used to determine whether a person has a healthy body weight for a person of their height. It is widely used by doctors and health professionals around the world to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
Understanding the Categories
- Underweight (< 18.5): You may need to gain some weight. It's recommended to consult with a doctor or a dietitian.
- Normal weight (18.5 - 24.9): You're at a healthy weight for your height. Keep up the good work through balanced diet and exercise!
- Overweight (25 - 29.9): You are slightly overweight. Losing some weight may benefit your cardiovascular health.
- Obese (30 or greater): Your health may be at risk. It is highly advised to consult a healthcare provider for weight management strategies.
Limitations of BMI:While BMI is a useful indicator, it does not measure body fat directly. It may overestimate body fat in athletes with high muscle mass, and underestimate it in older adults who have lost muscle density.
